Kash Patel

President Trump's nominee for FBI director

(Letter for Republican senator)

Subject line: Kash Patel should not be FBI Director

Dear (insert name),

I am one of your constituents, and I am humbly reaching out to you to help save our nation.

In the aftermath of the recent horrific attack in New Orleans, while learning about updates from law enforcement officials, I had a scary thought: What if we didn’t believe what the FBI was telling us? How could we ever feel safe if those whose job it was to keep us safe couldn’t be trusted?

That is the type of crushing dilemma we would face if Kash Patel became the new FBI director.

Patel is a man with a vendetta, who has lashed out at the Justice Department and identified approximately 60 people as members of the Deep State in his memoir. He also noted in his book, “The FBI is now the prime functionary of the Deep State.” How are we even considering putting him in charge?

If Patel is confirmed, there is no reason to believe that he won’t use his influence to go after people and organizations that he and President Trump do not like, rather than focusing his attention on real threats to Americans. The head of the FBI has to act in a law-abiding and independent, nonpartisan fashion. He cannot be someone who will prioritize Trump’s best interests or smear the truth to stay focused on personal vendettas. If you are not convinced that Patel can do that, you have no choice but to vote no. There is even more urgency now, as Trump is not being subtle about his desire to fire or force out via a buyout anyone he thinks won't advance HIS agenda. We cannot let our federal organizations, including our law enforcement agencies, be flooded only with Trump loyalists.

Furthermore, several notable and experienced individuals, including former Trump national security adviser John Bolton, have raised concerns about his qualifications. Charles Kupperman, who was deputy national security adviser during Trump’s first term, has said about Patel, “The idea that he is going to become the FBI director is appalling,” adding, “His legal career is modest at best. His ideas are ludicrous.” Additionally, former colleagues have noted Patel has overstated his experience. We cannot have an under qualified, conspiracy theory-crazed loyalist running this vital law enforcement agency. Our safety as a nation, not Trump’s best interests, has to come first.

Your constituents are watching and relying on you to put the American people before party. Please use your position to keep us safe and our democracy strong.

Thank you,
